I am a transferring student into Columbia this is my first year here. I'm choosing cultural studies because my work takes me all over the world and has allowed me to meet and experience different cultures. The more I have traveled and met other people from different races and countries I've realized more and more were more alike than different. The world to some degree is becoming homogoneous. I feel that the more you learn about culture the more open you are to new experiences and being more of a citizen of the world as opposed to your own community.

Americans are a big mix of different cultures but as other people come here from other countries they come to assimilate themselves into what they think is "American" and lose some of what they bought from their own country. It's important for everyone to know their own culture and family history, I believe it gives a person a stronger sense of self.
